Consist of the letters of author James Baldwin, 1924-, to editor William Rossa Cole, 1919- Most of the letters concern Baldwin's writing activities while in various parts of France, 1951-1958, and his efforts to get references for his Guggenheim fellowship application, 1953. At the time the correspondence begins Cole is an editor for Knopf, Baldwin's publisher. Later Cole moved to Simon and Schuster and a memo from him to Schuster with Schuster's response written on it, is included in the collection. There are also carbon copies of two Cole letters to Baldwin. Most of the letters are written from France and many are undated. Pencilled dates and sometimes other annotations have been added apparently by Cole.

James Baldwin was a novelist, essayist, short story writer and playwright. Born in Harlem, he provided a literary voice during the period of civil rights activism in the 1950s and 1960s. His first novel, "Go Tell It on the Mountain" (1953) is a partially autobiographical account of his youth. His other novels include "Giovanni's Room" (1956) and "Another Country" (1962), both concerned with homosexuality as a theme.
